oh the weather outside is frightful

We've had two back-to-back winter storms. Last night's episode left so much snow on the patio that the seats of the aluminum chairs are now covered. After the snow came some mix of freezing rain, sleet, rain, and eventually it all turned back to freezing crap.

Robert and I cleared the driveway this morning. It was kind of fun to see our neighbors out doing the same except for the gruff neighbor who never seems to see me (imagine the shame of having to smile or wave. Poor guy).

You know those annoying people who have some awful emergency and have to go driving around in the middle of these storms? The ones where you're never sure whether they'll have traction and you just hope they don't hit you? Those jerks? Well I've seen the enemy and they is me (or something to that effect). I had my own bona fide emergency this morning.

You see, the paper hadn't been delivered by 10:20. When I called to ask about it, the recording said that the paper would eventually arrive. Ok, so I waited until 11:30 to call again and got the same, by now, unbelievable recording. I was on hold for about 15 minutes before taking matters into my own hands.

I hopped into my car with four wheel drive and stability control, turned on the headlights and foglights, and took myself off to the nearest CVS where I was able to procure a paper. From there, I went immediately home. I mean, really, how can you drink Sunday coffee without a nice thick Boston Globe in hand, especially when the wood stove is blazing away?

And the paper? I read the usual sections, did my puzzle, and had just finished the magazine. Sometime around 2 pm, I looked outside, and there, in a double-wrapped plastic bag was the Sunday paper, looking for all the world as if it had been there since early morning.
