and now, the story

I've been somewhat quiet the last few weeks because I've been working on something. Now that people at my current job know about it all, I can write more publicly about it.

I have a new job, starting in mid February. It's at a brand new company, working with a group of experienced people, many of whom know each other from previous companies. The company is focusing on online retail (but does not actually sell anything besides software). I started talking to a former colleague who recently joined the company, oh, a month and a half ago. Then there was a huge fire in the building where the company's offices were. That was a setback, of course (everyone in the company was fine). They hired someone new who would be my boss, so we needed to start anew. There was a funeral somewhere in there, so I missed my first interview.

But eventually, we got on track. Last week, I had a first interview on Tuesday. That went extremely well from my point of view, and apparently from theirs too. On Friday, I had my second interview, and received my offer and accepted it. And I resigned from my current job this morning. Kind of a whirlwind.

I'll be the first technical writer at the company. From here, it all looks like a grand adventure. There's a bit of a commute at first, with some intention of moving west (and closer to home) within a few months.

The people I've met so far seem incredibly smart, energized, focused, and ready to take the world by storm. I'm looking forward to being a part of it.

And the rest of the weekend went well too. On Friday night, we went to a dinner party hosted by a new friend. It was a lovely evening, with lots of good food, much laughter, and some heart-felt connections.

On Saturday, Robert went off to work and I went off to an afternoon dance. There was a potluck for which I'd commissioned someone to make a gigantic and very elegant and delicious birthday cake. I got to share the cake with my dancing buddies, and they were most appreciative. Robert arrived just at the tail end of the cake and got a piece, and then stayed for the evening dance.

And yesterday was my birthday. We went out for brunch and the next people to walk into the restaurant were friends of ours. So we had an impromptu get-together with them and brunch was even more fun than I'd anticipated it would be. We spent a quiet afternoon by the fire and then went out for dinner and back home to bed.

And a whole bunch of people called to wish me a happy birthday, which was especially nice.

So, a great weekend, certainly making up for last year's extremely sad birthday. And now that I've had more excitement in the last few weeks than I've had in a long time, I think I'm going to go back to my sweetly boring life and just let it all sink in.

Many happy returns, Liz!

What's the company? Is it in that building in Cambridge near MIT that had the fire?
